At Least He Learned Something!

Ah, Valentine's Day.

I survived the board member vist - by not just one, but TWO board members during two different classes. The first one told me that he "actually learned something" in my class. I'll take that as a compliment. I also survived several singing telegrams (an Illiana tradition) interrupting every class at least once, and one of them was sent to me by some of my students.

In honor of Valentine's Day, I gave my students two copies of the same letter from Gloria to Jack. However, neither copy of the letter contained any punctuation. Depending on where students broke the sentences, it could either be a super-sappy love letter or an "I hate your guts" letter. It was a fun way to teach them the importance of punctuation.

Later that evening, I received this e-mail from a student:

well, i am sorry to be writting this too you so late so you probibly wont get this untill tommorow butt i redid my prodject on powerpoint and saved it onto my computer so i do have it butt i am not sure what to do i tryed to email it to u butt i am not very computer savvy and i could not get it to send i also tryed to get it to print in smaller windows butt i could not get that either i will keep trying so hopefully i get it all figured out by tommorow
PS: i decided against punctuation
i didnt think it would change my life or yours

I literally almost fell out of my chair laughing when I read this. What a great P.S.! I love it when students are clever, even if they are rebelling against normal writing conventions. He was thinking! About English class!

In other news, in reading a response to Dead Poets' Society, I found that, according to one of my students, the message of the movie is to "cease the day." (Perhaps more appropriate than she intended...)

Speaking of malapropisms, I wonder when Swedish Day comes around again?

Hopefully later I will post some thoughts I've been bouncing around related to Girl Meets God and the inservice that my school had with Dr. Neal Plantinga today. But first, I sleep.
