Why read?
So school has started again, and with it comes the age-old question, "why do we have to read this stuff, anyway?"
This year I'm starting with a few days of talking and writing about why we do read - and more importantly, why we bother to read fiction. (For those of you with interest in this topic, read Salman Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories.) This is where I need your help. Why do you read on a daily basis? And, also, why do you read fiction?
Also, if you have any good quotes about books or reading, send them my way. I'm making a collection for a "think-tank" bulletin board. Here's one of my favorites that I found already:
"There is no mistaking a real book when one meets it. It is like falling in love."
Christopher Morley

I read so that I can learn from people who are different from me. And often smarter and/or wiser. I want the benefit of someone's experience that is longer or more strenuous or different from mine. I read because people write books about the best things they think, it's like conversation with some of the stupid parts edited out. I read, especially great literature, because it sweeps me up - it captures me and engages me so that I forget everything else and live in its world and its moment. The only other things that do that for me on a regular basis are music and kissing.
that's what I have for now.
