Books Worth Listening To

So I have joined the 21st century and now am the proud owner of an mp3 player. But, this brings with it a dilemma:

The player comes with a free trial of audible.com, an online audio book distributor. I get 3 free books. Being Dutch, I plan to take full advantage of this offer. The problem is, which 3 books? I have a hard enough time choosing which three books to take on vacation with me!

I am open to suggestions. However, it does need to meet the following criteria:
1. It must be a book that can be listened to. Some books are too complicated to listen to.
2. It must be a book that I will listen to multiple times (hence, ruling out any sort of current popular fiction).
3. It must be a book that is available (in some initial searches, I failed to find some of my favorites).

Lewis? Fiction? Nonfiction? Be educated? Have fun?

Help! What should I choose?

Hi, it's Betsy =)

No Frederick Buechner or Annie Dillard? Those would be wonderful to listen to.

Otherwise, I'd opt for something like CS Lewis' Great Divorce.

And my third would be taking a risk and listening something educational that I would learn something new about. And then I could feel smart telling people about this new information that turned out to be really interesting. Hopefully.

Happy choosing!

(I totally understand your dilemma. I have yet to spend my $50 to Barnes and Noble, despite the fact that I have been in the store multiple times with the card since. I let Jordan use $25 of my other gift cards, partly out of my wondrous generosity, partly because I was jealous he actually could CHOOSE something.)

um...there's this book by Palmer, the courage to....oh wait, don't you dare! what about a book from ed 307--do you think it would be any more painful being read?

i'd be all for CS Lewis--one of the Narnia series?

A prayer for Owen Meany--I'd love to listen to that one

hm, i don't have any book suggestions... what i do have is a comment about audio books... make sure you like the person's voice that is reading the book!! my dad drives to and from grand rapids every day for work and has listened to hundreds of books on tape to pass the time. often times a good book not only is good in content but also is good because the person reading the book has lots of expression in their voice and isn't monotone. i'm not sure if you are able to check the voice of the person reading the books you decide on, but i definitely think that it would be worth at least hearing a sample of the reader to make sure you would want to hear their voice over and over again as you re-read the book...

wow, long comment... haha

it was wonderful seeing you the other day =)

you can't underline in mp3s. So pick something that you will enjoy along the way. For me, this means fiction or memoir. Buechner, maybe Coupland...

I suggest _LOTR_, _Anna Karenina_, or Irving Stone's _The Agony and the Ecstasy_.

More bang for your buck, baby.

hey- stop smirking. These are serious suggestions, man. Irving Stone rocks my face off.

You're right about Karenina, Elise; that's a lot o' bang for one's buck. However, something on the topic of asparagus would probably be more generally applicable in life. I recommend Asparagus by F.M. Hexamer. The 1921 edition has been particularly helpful, and I'm sure it's on audio.

If you're truly doing the Dutch thing, you'll just pick out the most expensive and longest items that are available. Forget pleasure, you have to squeeze every last free cent out of this deal! If this isn't your plan, I second Hexamer. In the words of the author, "Asparagus is a veritable joyride of engrossment. I never never written anything of this degree of caliber; it will cause you to have uncontrollable urges to insert asparagus into your nasal cavity. I have 10 there now." Clearly, you should not miss an oppourtunity to own such a revolutionary agricultural treatise.

Hey Kristin! I did the a very similar deal from audible.com and chose books from the ender's game and ender's shadow series. I also, noted before buying them that they were some of the more expensive ones ranging with prices normally aroun$ $30 or so. Great books, not to short so a good bit of listening time value, and you (or at least I) can listen to them multiple times.

Sorry I didn't post this earlier - I hope it's not too late - but I love listening to a good spine-tingling mystery. Of course Sherlock Holmes is great, but I know most of them really well so I lean towards Agatha Christy or P.D. James.
