Swiftly goes the year....

So, apparently my students aren't as funny this year...or maybe I just spend less time laughing at their gaffes. Here's a gem from final exams:

Question: Write a sentence using the word "your".

Answer: "Richard, go walk the dog." (yeah, me neither.)


Today I had them writing some Tom Swifties (sentences where the dialogue tag is a pun on what is said, based on the book character Tom Swift). Here are some of the contributions:

"I see a ghost!" Tom said gravely.
"Oh no! We've lost Claire!" her friends said declaratively.
"Someone erased my whole paper!" Tom said blankly.
"This knife is sharp!" the chef said edgily.
"No really, the storm knocked my fence down," Tom said defensively.
"Wake up!" Tom said alarmingly.
"That's my favorite kind of ice tea," Tom said briskly.

Hopefully I'll get some more as the week goes on.
